Pay Per Click Marketing

Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing is the fastest way to get visitors to your site.  You pay anywhere from $0.05 to $10.00 or more for each visitor who comes to your site.  As you can see, if you do not carefully manage these campaigns, you can lose your shirt!

But done correctly, PPC can generate the kinds of quality, targeted traffic your site needs.

First of all, if you are a local business, you want to geo-target your campaigns.  This means that if “dog grooming” is one of your keyword terms and your business is in Riverside, CA, people in Des Moins, Iowa aren’t clicking on your ad.  Only people in the Inland Empire, or however you define your service area, are able to see the ad and click on it.

Secondly, you want to develop good ads that make people want to click.  PPC is a lot like classified ads in the good old days.  You have a maximum of 90 characters to “sell” your site.  Use them well.

Next, you should realize that you are not limited to one ad.  In fact, you should have a separate ad for each set of keywords.  For instance if you are targeting “dog grooming” and “pet washing” as separate keywords, they should have separate ads because the keywords should appear in the ad.

Additionally, you should know that you can test multiple versions of your ad.  Then, the version that is most productive for you can become the one you use.

Finally, it used to be that the top bidder got the top spot.  But things have changed.  Google, Yahoo, and the other ad networks give PPC advertisers a “quality ranking” which combines the price that the advertiser is willing to pay with their click through rate.  You can actually have a higher position with a lower bid amount if you write a good ad.
